Secure Accommodation

The Secure Accommodation capital programme provides resources for investment in secure children’s homes, which accommodate young people aged 12 to 17 years. All but one of these homes is linked to, and funded through, a local authority. All homes are inspected annually and licensed by the Commission for Social Care Inspection and by Ofsted.

The programme transferred from the DfE to ourselves in June 2010. The 2011-12 budget for the Secure Accommodation programme is £20m.

We work with secure homes to deliver agreed projects. The arrangements for submitting bids are reviewed and announced periodically. Applications for funding are presented to us by the homes or their local authorities. We work together with the DfE, consultants W.S. Atkins and Ofsted to assess these.

Grant award letters are issued to successful bidders, and we then fund the agreed projects up to the maximum amount awarded, on receipt of claims and supporting invoices.
