BSF programme update: Waves 4–6 confirmed; waves 10–15 ‘one school pathfinders’ allocated;

16 June 2006

On 15 June 2006, the DCSF (previously DfES) formally invited the 33 local authorities allocated to waves 4 to 6 of BSF (and who have not hitherto been involved in BSF) to begin their preparations to join the programme.

A second phase of ‘one school pathfinders’ has also been announced. 25 local authorities who are allocated in waves 10–15 of BSF will receive BSF funding to rebuild a secondary school in their area. These schools will be delivered, where appropriate, through the National Framework for Academies and other educational facilities being established by PfS.

This gives local authorities the green light to develop their plans on how their local schools will benefit from BSF and brings to 72 the number of local authorities who are now involved in BSF waves 1 to 6. The local authorities will receive funding under the next roll–out of BSF when they join between 2008/09 and 2010/11.

In addition to these 33 new authorities, a further 18 authorities from waves 1 to 3 (including pathfinders) are also being asked to show their readiness to proceed with a second project in waves 4–6. These local authorities will be continuing or completing their educational transformation in waves 4–6.

From this combined total of 51, those to be allocated to wave 4 will be announced in December 2006. The criteria for inclusion into waves 4 to 6 include high educational and social need, and the decision on whether a local authority joins the programme in wave 4 will also be based on its readiness to deliver.

An announcement will also be made in December 2006 as to which of waves 5 or 6 those unsuccessful in being selected for wave 4 will be placed. The full list of waves 4–6 local authorities is set out below. Those already involved in waves 1 to 3 (including pathfinders) are marked with an asterisk.
