The Board

The PfS Board is appointed by the Secretary of State for Education. The Board provide oversight of PfS's resources and scrutinise the performance of PfS's Chief Executive and senior team. Furthermore, the Board has corporate responsibility for ensuring that PfS fulfils the aims and objectives set by the Secretary of State and, as agreed in the PfS Business Plan, for promoting the effective use of resources by PfS. In addition, it approves the annual PfS Business Plan. The Board meets formally at least six times a year and has two Away Days.

Board members

PfS's Chairman:

Michael was appointed by the Secretary of State for Education. As Chairman he is responsible for providing strategic leadership, encouraging high standards of propriety and promoting the efficient and effective use of resources. Mike was previously the Chief Executive of Energis plc., and a Director of BT Europe. He is a non-executive director and his appointment period is from Jan 2008 - Dec 2010 and he receives £25,000 in remuneration for his appointment


PfS Board Member:

Brian is a non-executive director of the Board and sits on the PfS Audit and Remuneration Committees. Brian is also a non-executive director of the Oxford Radcliffe Hospital Trust and was previously Deputy Chief Executive for the Office of Government Commerce and a Director at BT. His appointment period is from May 2008 - April 2011 and he receives £10,000 a year remuneration for his services.


PfS Board Member:

Christine is a non-executive director of the Board and sits on the Remuneration Committee. Christine is also the Director of the Centre for Excellence and Outcomes in Children and Young People's Services (C4EO) and is a member of the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT) Advisory Council. She was previously DCS at Telford and Wrekin Council. Her appointment period is from May 2008 - April 2011 and she receives £10,000 a year in remuneration for her work on the board.


PfS Board Member:

Richard is a non-executive director of the Board and also sits on the PfS Audit and Remuneration Committees. Richard is a non voting member of the BSFI Investment Committee, the Chairman of Community Health Partnerships and a visiting professor at the University of Salford. Previously Richard sat on the Board of Alfred McAlpine and was Managing Director of GEC. Richard's period of appointment is from May 2008 - April 2012 and he receives £20,000 a year in remuneration for his services at PfS and BSFI.


PfS Board Member:

Stella is a non-executive Director of the Board and is also the Chairman of the Audit Committee. Stella is also a non executive director of the West Midlands Ambulance (NHS Trust). Stella is a qualified accountant and was previously a Director of Shell. Her period of appointment is from May 2008 - April 2012 and she receives £10,000 a year in remuneration for service.


PfS Board Member:

Erica is the Executive Head Teacher of the Leathersellers’ Federation of Schools. The Federation was established in September 2008 in Lewisham and is a partnership of two existing schools. A third school will join the federation when it opens in 2011. The Federation is a 'hard federation' led by a single governing body.

Erica began her career as a Science Teacher in 1973 and has taught for 36 years in South East London. She was the Head Teacher of Prendergast School from 1998 to 2008.

Other areas of interest and responsibility include: National Leader of Education (National College); non-executive Director (James Allen’s Girls’ School); and Freeman of the Company of Educators.


PfS Board Member:

Von is former head teacher of the John Perryn Primary School and Children's Centre in Acton, Ealing, where she has overseen significant improvements in the school and has been the driving force in delivering a new school building through the Primary Capital Programme.

Prior to John Perryn, Von held a number of headships and troubleshooting roles in primary schools across London helping many out of special measures. Throughout her career Von has championed school improvement and the establishment of positive relationships with local communities.

Von has a MA in Education in multicultural urban areas from London University and is a regular speaker at national conferences on school buildings and learning environments.

Von received the BCSE Industry Head Teachers Award for Inspirational Leadership in 2010.


PfS Board Member:

Ruth Thompson joined Partnerships for Schools in June 2011 as Interim Chief Executive, after retiring from the civil service in April 2009 to pursue other interests and opportunities. She was previously Director General, Higher Education from 2006 to 2009.

Ruth was a career civil servant for more than thirty years. She joined with history degrees from Somerville College and St Antony's College, Oxford, her D. Phil involving a formative year doing research in Argentina. She worked in several central government departments - Treasury, Trade and Industry, Social Security and Education.
