Change Management seminar

01 October 2008

Change Management seminar for BSF local authorities and schools in the Southern region

On Wednesday 1 October, 2008, 110 delegates took part in a PfS seminar for local authorities and schools in the southern region. The Seminar was presented in partnership with the Institute of Education, University of London, with colleagues from the London Centre for Leadership in Learning, the National College of School Leadership and the Training and Development Agency.

The day was opened by Dr Raphael Wilkins, Head of Consultancy and Knowledge Transfer, London Centre for Leadership in Learning, Institute of Education, University of London urging us to capture the evidence of transformation with BSF.

Michael Buchanan, Education Director (PfS) presented an introduction to the PfS Change Management Guidance, identifying some key processes and issues and setting out PfS’s expectations in relation to Local Authority and school change management strategies within BSF programmes.

Neils Alstrup and Hanna Bohn Vinkel from LOOP introduced the philosophy, principles and pedagogy underpinning a radical approach to transforming learning that has evidence of high impact on outcomes from 11 schools in Denmark. Participants were able to consider this ambitious, holistic approach to system-wide re-design of curriculum, pedagogy, school design and change management.

The morning ended with Jackie Valin - Executive Headteacher (Southfields Community College, London Borough of Wandsworth) and Mike Chapman – Executive Headteacher (High Storrs School, Sheffield) providing invaluable insights into their experience of promoting and managing change, using their BSF investment to make a significant contribution to outcomes for their school and wider communities.

In the afternoon, participants worked in groups to:

  • reflect on opportunities and challenges from the morning session and share experiences;
  • explore and develop thinking around change management themes;
  • use prompts from a Thinking & Planning Frame produced by PfS to consider key processes and strategies for change around their chosen theme and stakeholder group.

All presentations and a copy of the Thinking & Planning Frame are available to download here.

Also available to download is 'How We Can Help', information from Dr Raphael Wilkins about opportunities to support your BSF programme with the IOE, University of London.

If you attended the seminar and have not yet completed the on-line feedback form, please do. This will help us to plan future events so that they meet your needs. The reference is form can be found at:

Background

LOOP develops schools for the future (website: www.loop.bz)

A school in transition must consider values, future educational methods and the way to organise everyday life with curriculum, children, staff and parents. This forms the basis for the development of the physical environment.

The continuous development of a school is based on the children's, the employees' and the parents' commitment and ownership. Dialogue takes place within a framework, where the individual experiences a meaningful participation.

  • LOOP focuses on the school's education, the organisation of the staff and keeps this focus throughout the entire project - from thought to realisation.
  • LOOP ensures links between teaching, organisation and the building in collaboration between all parties involved.
  • LOOP establishes dialogue between the many parties involved and ensures progress in the total project.
  • LOOP works in a network of partners among architects, process consultants, engineers and contractors covering all of the development and building process from thought to realisation.

LOOP is owned by 3 partners all taking actively part in the consultancy:

Hanna Bohn Vinkel: Teacher from Hellerup teacher's training college.
Hanna is widely experienced in implementing development processes in the public sector. She has worked with educational development, establishing and leading partnering teams focusing on communication and group psychology. Hanna has for the last six years preceding LOOP operated in Gentofte Kommune's (Danish municipality) school development and rebuilding project, SKUB, Hanna was head of project management.

Niels Chr. Alstrup: M.Sc.E. and Ph.D. from the Technical University of Denmark.
Niels is experienced in value-based leadership and strategic analysis. He has worked with change management in both public sector institutions and private companies. In the last three years preceding LOOP, he has operated in Gentofte Kommune's (Danish municipality) school development and rebuilding project, SKUB. Niels was head of development in the project.
