Design Guidance

Building Bulletins

Building Bulletins are produced by the DCSF and offer guidance on a range of subjects, from whole school design schedules to detailed engineering specifics. A complete list of DCSF publications, including Building Bulletins, can be downloaded from the Teachernet website.

Building Bulletin 98

BB98: Briefing framework for secondary school projects sets out simple, realistic, non–statutory area guidelines for secondary school buildings and grounds. It also includes simple guidance on how schools and LAs should develop the brief for any secondary school and the design criteria that are crucial for the client body to consider.

Revisiting BB98: The design team at PfS have published a Schedule of Accommodation proforma, which works with the key recommendations of BB98 but is based on families of spaces with a critical mass to allow for various educational models to evolve and develop.

In September 2008, Beech Williamson, Design Manager at PfS, put together a presentation on Revisiting BB98, which can be downloaded from here.

Building Bulletin 77

The guidance in BB77: Designing for Pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities promotes a high quality of design in learning environments for pupils with special educational needs (SEN) and disabilities, supporting their education entitlement, health, safety and welfare.

BB77 was updated in 2006 after public consultation. The draft and updated versions and more details about the consultation, as well as schedules of accommodation, cost guidance and school questionnaires are available on the Teachernet website.
